The Replicator with some 3D Prints

I’m very proud to announce the release of the 3rd Generation MakerBot 3D Printer – “The Replicator“. I’ve been working for MakerBot, designing the all-new electronics for the Replicator for several months now, and it’s very exciting to see it finally released. The team that I’ve worked with at MakerBot has been absolutely amazing, and their hard work truly shows.

As always, the machine is completely open source, and all the schematics, firmware, etc, will be available soon for all to enjoy! Once that happens, I’ll be sure to do a follow-up explaining all the electronics, and why they are so amazing (in this humble engineer’s opinion). For now, enjoy a demo of it in action below, and check out all the press it’s been getting!

The theme of the evening was “rethinking our society”, so naturally, my talk focused on how open source concepts could be used to re-imagine how our world works. National Engineers Week Foundation is a group that works to encourage students to get excited about studying engineering and technology- a cause that I strongly identify with. Their new “College Edition” competition recognizes third-, fourth- and fifth-year engineering students. A single winner is chosen from each of the participating professional engineering organizations. I’m honored to announce that I was selected as the first annual “New College Face of Engineering” for IEEE-USA (The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers). Don’t expect to see my face plastered on any billboards anytime soon, but it’s still exciting to be recognized by such a prestigious organization – I’m proud to call myself a member of IEEE.

JeremyBlum.com Goes Three Point Oh

iPad Version (Blog Shown)

This has been in the works for a long time. I started developing this new website design in July (6 months before I launched it), and actually finished most of the design by September. For the last three months, I’ve been filling in a tremendous amount of content for my all new portfolio page. My new portfolio page covers just about every project I’ve ever done and includes links to source materials, news stories, related blog posts, multimedia, and more for each and every entry. I’m really happy with the way it turned out – It even has an entry for the redesign of this very website.

The aspect of my new design that I’m most excited about is the header. It’s actually a functional, open source circuit that I created using Cadsoft Eagle. You can download the source files on github. In addition to having textual links to each page, the buttons and LEDs can also be used for navigation, and the liquid crystal display shows the current page title. Though I haven’t actually created this circuit board in real life (yet), it should work as shown in the header after some simple programming.

Along with this all new desktop version of my site, I also launched both iPad (see photo) and mobile versions. If you visit JeremyBlum.com from your mobile device it should load the mobile version automatically (note: not all blackberries are recognized as mobile devices due to each one having a different user agent).

Each Fall, the Cornell Daily Sun features Cornell’s 25 “most interesting seniors” in its last issue of the semester. This year they decided to call us “mysterious” – noting that the group they chose might not be the ones stealing every headline, but they are are ones making a lasting impact on Cornell’s campus. Yes, you heard me right. Atdiy, of the ZombieTech Podcast (I was their guest recently), wrote and recorded a lovely song about me battling zombified, 3D-Printed, PLA plastic. Be sure to give the podcast a quick listen if you haven’t yet – I discuss the tools I would use to survive a Zombie Apocolypse (Hint: they involve 3D-Printers and corn-based PLA plastic). Interdisciplinary Sustainability Student Summit

This past weekend was the first annual Interdisciplinary Sustainability Student Summit (ISSS). I organized the event along with my fellow Cornell University Sustainable Design team leaders. The summit, held at the General Assembly in New York City’s Flatiron district, hosted about 100 student leaders, entrepreneurs, teachers, students, and professionals for a day of enlightened discussion on the topic of interdisciplinary sustainability. Some of our notable speakers and panelists included:

The event was a huge success, and we’re already planning for next years event, which we hope to co-host with some other universities. Many of the participants approached me during and after the event to express how happy they were to have a forum where they could share their ideas with other like-minded individuals. Cornell Daily Sun Science Spotlight

I was recently profiled (along with Brian Shiffer – a fellow hacker and good friend) in the Cornell Daily Sun. You can read the whole article here. Both of us attended MakerFaire NYC and the Open Hardware Summit. I presented my sudoglove at the Open Hardware Summit, and I worked at the Makerbot booth at MakerFaire. Brian gave a presentation about Zeo at MakerFaire’s Health 2.0 tent.
